You can embed a video from your computer directly into your presentation, or you can link to a video stored on your computer. (Embedded videos are convenient, but they increase the size of your presentation. Linked videos keep your presentation's size smaller, but links can break. To prevent possible problems with a broken link to a video on your computer, it's a good idea to copy the video into the same folder as your presentation, and link to it there.)
If the video you want to play is on Vimeo or YouTube, you can link to it from your presentation with the help of an Office add-in. (Such videos also keep your presentation's size smaller, and they do not need to be copied to your computer. The link simply points to the video on the web site where it lives.)
Insert a video stored on your computer
- In Normal view, select the slide you'd like to add a video to.
- On the Insert tab, click Video, then click Movie from File.
- In the Choose a Movie dialog box, select the file you want to insert.
- If you want to embed the video on the slide, simply click Insert.
- If you want to put a link to the video on the slide, click Options at the lower left corner of the dialog box, and then select the Link to file box, and then click Insert.
Once you've added a video to your presentation, you can add effects and choose whether the video plays automatically or when it is clicked.
Tip: PowerPoint 2016 for Mac supports the playback of video with multiple audio tracks. It also supports closed captions and subtitles that are embedded in video files. For more information, see Make your PowerPoint presentations accessible.
Insert a web video
To embed web-based videos (online videos from YouTube or Vimeo) in your presentations in PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, first you need to install an Office add-in named Web Video Player. Here's how:
Install the web video player
- Select the Insert tab on the ribbon, and then select Store. (Or, in your web browser, go to https://store.office.com.)
- Enter "Web Video Player" in the search box, and follow the steps to install the add-in.
- Select the player to open the page about it. Then click the Add button.
- On the next page, click Open in PowerPoint. Then click the Trust this add-in button.
- In PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, on the Insert tab of the ribbon, click My Add-Ins.
- In the Office Add-ins dialog box, select the Web Video Player, then click Insert. This action adds the player to the My Add-ins menu.
Now you are ready to embed a YouTube or Vimeo video in your presentation.
To insert a web video, you need a link (also called a URL) to the page where the video lives. Find the video on the web site, then click the Share button. That opens a window where you can copy a link for the video. (The link will look like "https://youtu.be/..." or "https://vimeo.com/...". Do NOT use the "embed" code for the video. Embed codes don't work in the web video player.)
Insert a link to a web video
- In PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, open the slide where you want to insert the video, and click the spot where you want to insert it.
- On the Insert tab of the ribbon, click My Add-ins, then click the Web Video Player.
The player appears on your slide.
- In the box inside the player, paste the link for your video. Next to that box, click Set Video.
A still image of the video should appear, along with a play button and the video is ready to play.
